- Why am I seeing a message like "Second Life cannot be accessed from this computer"?
This happens infrequently due to a temporary situation with Second Life that Linden Lab fixes within a few hours. Usually you are still able to connect with the official Second Life Viewer. Feel free to report this when it occurs but please be aware that the problem usually goes away on it's own. - How do I update to the latest version?
Updates are free and can be installed via iTunes or from the App Store application on your device. Please note that you must be connected via WiFi to update or via syncing with iTunes, you will not see the available updates if connected solely via 3G. - Does Pocket Metaverse run on the iPad?
Version 1.2 will run as a fully native iPad application. Previous versions will work with the iPad but do not take advantage of the full screen, make sure you've updated to the latest version to take advantage of these capabilities. Updates are free, use iTunes to get the latest version. - Does Pocket Metaverse run on the iPhone 4?
Version 1.4 takes full advantage of the iPhone 4, including displaying higher resolution graphics for the UI and profile pictures. This version also take full advantage of iPhone OS 4 (see here). Previous versions will work with the iPad but do not take advantage of the full screen, make sure you've updated to the latest version to take advantage of these capabilities. Updates are free, use iTunes to get the latest version. - Does Pocket Metaverse support iPhone OS 4 multitasking?
Version 1.4 takes full advantage of the iPhone 4 OS, including multitasking, although only on the devices that Apple has enabled multitasking for, which is currently the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4 - see iOS 4 About Multitasking on the Apple support site. In order to use multitasking, it must first be enabled in the Settings screen. Because users who are not familiar with multitasking often inadvertently leave apps running in the background, we've chosen to make this feature optional in this version and made it a requirement to turn it on in the settings. When multitasking is enabled, if you switch out of Pocket Metaverse and you are logged in, you have up to 3 minutes to switch back before being logged out. During this time, you're fully connected to Second Life and your phone will use it's batter charge to maintain this connection. For this reason, it's recommended to always log out of SL before switching out unless you're going to come right back to Pocket Metaverse. - Didn't this app used to be called Touch Life?
We renamed our application from Touch Life to comply with Linden Lab's Third Party Viewer Policy. - Why are there two editions of Pocket Metaverse in the App Store?
There are Free and Pro versions of the application available. The Free version only provides Friends, IM, Chat, and Map functionality and will present an advertisement at the top of the screen. It can be upgraded to the full Pro version inside the app. The Pro version has all pro features enabled. All Touch Life users will receive free upgrades to Pocket Metaverse Pro. - What do I need to run Pocket Metaverse?
Pocket Metaverse has been tested on all iPhone and iPad models and should work with any of them. Pocket Metaverse is a large application and will run best on an iPhone 3GS, the iPad, or newer models when they're available. Users of older devices will mainly notice that the application can take some time to fully start up. We recommend connecting via WiFi or high bandwidth 3G data services. Users of the iPhone 2G, in particular, should use WiFi for the best experience. Connecting via an EDGE or 2G data service can take a long time for login to complete, and in some cases where the bandwidth is very slow, may fail to connect or be unable to sustain a connection to Second Life. - How is Pocket Metaverse different than other mobile applications for Second Life?
Pocket Metaverse communicates directly from your iPhone to Second Life. This is important for two reasons. First, some mobile applications that allow you to log into Second Life require your Second Life password and other sensitive information to pass through their servers, and there is always a risk when you share this type of confidential data through any third-party servers. No matter how trustworthy a third-party server is, you're also dependent on their ability to protect their servers from malicious attack to protect your data. Pocket Metaverse connects only to the Second Life Grid or other OpenSim grids that you specify, it does not communicate with our servers and collects no data about you for any purpose. The other big advantage is that it is much easier for us to implement richer user interface features, since we can program to the full scope of the Second Life Protocol in order perform any task a conventional viewer would. - Does Pocket Metaverse store my password on your servers?
This is an important question and common concern, so to reiterate from the previous answer above, Pocket Metaverse absolutely does not send your password or any other data to any servers other than those of Linden Lab or the OpenSim server you want to log into. - Does Pocket Metaverse support Japanese or other international characters in Chat and IM?
As of version 1.0.2, Pocket Metaverse can support any Unicode characters in Chat and IM. If you are using an earlier version, please update your app to the latest release in the App Store. - Will Pocket Metaverse run with OpenSim?
As of version 1.1, you can connect to OpenSim grids. Please note that only the Pro version lets you enter in your own OpenSim grid urls, otherwise you are limited to a small set of pre-registered OpenSim grids. - How does my avatar appear in-world?
Your avatar should appear the same as it looked the last time you logged off from the normal Second Life viewer. Prior to version 1.0.4, it was possible that under certain conditions, your avatar's clothing might not appear correctly but this should no longer occur. It is possible that occasionally your avatar might take some time to appear or might appear as a cloud, but this should not be a common occurrence. In all cases, your avatar's appearance can be fixed by logging in with the regular viewer into a low-lag area, choosing "Edit Appearance", and waiting a few of minutes before logging back out. - How do I add a friend?
Go to the More tab in the right of the main screen, choose Search, and type in the name of the person you want to find. They should come up in the search results and click on the search result bearing their name. On the Profile is a button that reads "Add Friend...". Click on that and invite them to be your friend. - How do I instant message someone?
If the person is not in your Friends list, follow the same steps as in the previous answer for finding an avatar profile. On the Profile is a button that reads "IM". Click on that and start and IM session with them. As a shortcut, there is a button in the upper right-hand corner of the IM screen that, when tapped, will prompt you to enter the name of the avatar you wish to IM with. - How do I make the keyboard go away? It's covering the bottom tab buttons.
In most cases, you can make the on-screen keyboard go away by tapping outside of it. For example, in the Chat and IM views, tap outside the keyboard, in the area where the chat text is displayed, and the keyboard will slide back down. - How do I pay someone money?
Follow the same steps as in the previous answer for finding an avatar profile or selecting the avatar from your Friends list. On the Profile is a button that reads "Pay...". Click on that and enter the amount you'd like to pay them. Your current L$ balance is displayed. - How do I teleport someone to me?
Follow the same steps as in the previous answer for finding an avatar profile or selecting the avatar from your Friends list. On the Profile is a button that reads "Offer Teleport...". Click on that and offer to teleport them to your location. - How do I give someone an inventory item?
Find the item in your inventory and click on it to display it's property view. Assuming you have the right to transfer the inventory, there is a "Give" button enabled. Click on that and an alert box will appear where you can type the name of the person you want to give the item to. When they accept or reject it, you will be presented with an alert to let you know the transaction is complete. - How do I teleport?
Tap and hold your finger on the screen while the Map is display. A box will appear that reads "Teleport". Click on the blue circular button on that box to initiate a teleport. Please note that teleports occasionally fail, so you may have to try again if it doesn't work the first time. - How do I move around?
You can teleport to most places via the Map view. However, to actually control you avatar, such as walking or turning around, you can do so from the MiniMap, which is in the Chat view. Click on the icon in the upper right hand corner of the Chat view and the MiniMap will appear. There is an arrow at the top of the MiniMap. Tapping and holding that will cause your avatar to walk forward. On the bottom is a curved line with arrows on each end. Tapping on that and moving your finger in a circular "dialing" motion will turn your avatar around. As you turn, the North, South, East, and West compass points will rotate to orient themselves so that the direction you're moving in is always pointed "up" on the MiniMap display. - How do I use the MiniMap to see who's near me?
You can zoom in the MiniMap by using the traditional iPhone "pinch zoom" technique or you can use the +/- buttons to zoom in or out. When you zoom in far enough, the nearby avatars will turn from green dots to small icons and the names of the avatars will appear above their heads. With version 1.4, there's also the Nearby avatar list under the People tab. - How do I read a notecard?
Find the notecard in your inventory and click on it to display it's property view. There is a button in the upper-right labelled "Open". Click on that and you can read the contents of the notecard. - How do I view a picture or texture?
Find the picture or texture in your inventory and click on it to display it's property view. There is a button in the upper-right labelled "Open". Click on that and you can view the image. It may take some time for the image to load the first time you open it, subsequent times should be much faster. You can pinch-zoom and pan around the image by dragging with your finger. If you have copy and modify permission, you can also save the image to your iPhone Photo Album. - Why is my avatar not appearing correctly?
This is a problem that can happen infrequently, although it should seldom occur with 1.4. The process by which a viewer regenerates the visual appearance for your avatar is called "rebaking" because it involves taking all of the image textures of your avatar's skin and clothing and "baking" them together into a set of images that are sent up to Second Life for display on your avatar. This should usually not be necessary and when it is, it should happen automatically. However on the off chance that your avatar appears unclothed, you can force rebaking by entering ///rebake in chat. Please note that rebaking uses many megabytes of memory to perform and thus will be slow and potentially crash-prone on old iPhone 2G and 3G phones which have very little memory to running applications. For this reason, we allow you to turn off rebaking in the Settings.
